With the upcoming pmbootstrap 3.11 release, UI packages can set which service managers they support. This means that some may support only OpenRC, some may support only systemd, and some may support both.
While postmarketOS strives to try to support both service managers, we cannot force UI maintainers to support both. Historically, this has led to some UIs under one service manager being well supported, while the same UI under the other service manager loses functionality and breaks, sometimes to the point of not working at all.
By limiting the configurations a UI can be installed into to what the maintainer actually supports, postmarketOS can provide more consistent quality and make debugging any issues that do arise easier.
UIs now supporting only one service manager
If your UI of choice is listed below and you use a service manager that is now listed as unsupported: Your existing installs most likely will not suddenly stop working on upgrade, as this change is done for new installs. While we would like to provide a way to switch service managers on an existing install, the logic behind that is very complex and can easily break things or put an install in a state where issues can't be reproduced on a clean install, making support impossible. Because of this, we recommend reinstalling with the supported service manager.
